Presque Isle County Up North Prevention recently presented naloxone to Posen Student Resource Officer James Leedy, to include in the school's Automated External Defibrillator (AED) machine.
Naloxone is a safe antidote to a suspected overdose and, when given in time, can save a life. Research shows that when naloxone and overdose education are available to community members, overdose deaths decrease in those communities. Therefore, increasing the availability and targeted distribution of naloxone is a critical component of our efforts to reduce opioid-related overdose deaths and, when combined with the availability of effective treatment, to ending the opioid epidemic.Â
Provisional data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics indicate there were an estimated 107,543 drug overdose deaths in the United States during 2023—a decrease of 3% from the 111,029 deaths estimated in 2022. This is the first annual decrease in drug overdose deaths since 2018.
Up North Prevention facilitates access to naloxone and provides training on how to use it.Â
