The “Lock It Up Campaign” is a prevention initiative led by the Live Well Kalkaska Substance Free Coalition to encourage safe and responsible storage of marijuana products in homes where they are present. As marijuana becomes more accessible, it is increasingly important for adults to ensure these products are kept out of reach of youth. Many marijuana items—especially edibles, vape cartridges, and concentrates—can resemble regular food or everyday products, increasing the risk of accidental use or youth access.
Through community education and outreach, the campaign raises awareness about the importance of locking up marijuana and storing it safely, just as you would medications, alcohol, or other substances that could pose a risk to children and teens. To support this effort, the coalition provides free marijuana lock bags to community members. Residents can register online and complete a short survey before receiving a bag, which helps the coalition better understand community awareness and storage practices.
To qualify, participants must be 21 years of age or older and either be a Kalkaska County resident or a parent, guardian, or grandparent of a Kalkaska student. The lock bags are discreet, zippered pouches with built-in combination locks that provide a simple and effective way to keep marijuana secured.
In addition, the coalition received a $3,000 grant award from Prevention Network to expand the campaign by purchasing additional lock bags and increasing educational outreach. Messaging for the campaign will be promoted through social media posts, postcards, and posters throughout the community.
These efforts build on existing Lock It Up billboards funded through a Community Policing Grant in partnership with the Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Office. Together, these strategies help promote responsible storage practices, prevent accidental ingestion, and reduce youth access to marijuana in Kalkaska County.
