Hidden in Plain Sight: Helping Families Spot the Warning Signs

Up North Prevention and the Presque Isle County Council on Aging recently partnered to host an impactful educational event, bringing the Hidden in Plain Sight (HIPS) Trailer to the local community.

The HIPS Trailer is a mobile replica of a teenager’s bedroom, designed to help parents, grandparents, and caregivers recognize signs of underage substance use that may be “hidden in plain sight.” From seemingly innocent household items to cleverly disguised paraphernalia, the exhibit offers eye-opening insight into how teens might conceal alcohol, cannabis, vapes, and other harmful substances.

Community members were invited to take self-guided tours of the trailer, with Michigan State Trooper Jason Kunath and Michigan State Police Cadet Zachary Holifield on hand to answer questions and provide valuable resources on prevention and early detection.

This unique educational experience empowers families to be more aware, engaged, and proactive in fostering safe, healthy environments for young people.
