Student leaders from across the state gathered at the 37th annual Students Leading Students (SLS) conference at Shanty Creek Resort this spring to work on their chapter goals, network with members across the state, and get reenergized about the work they’re each doing in their home chapters. The agenda was packed from breakfast to bedtime with sessions geared toward reducing stigma and peer substance use, and increasing awareness of issues related to youth development, such as mental health, social media, and safe driving. What was unique about this conference is that it was planned and implemented by a team of youth, with educational tracks for both youth and advisors. The five members of the Alcona SLS chapter benefited not only from the content of the sessions, but by seeing the youth leadership in action, and getting a closer look at what chapters around the state are doing to address issues affecting youth.
