The Talents of Recovery Up North: A Celebration of Strength and Creativity

The Live Well Kalkaska Coalition recently hosted its 2nd Annual recovery event, The Talents of Recovery Up North. Despite a chilly, wet day, the event brought together a meaningful turnout of community members, recovery support groups, and vendors who showcased the creativity and resilience of individuals in recovery. From artwork to small business initiatives, the event highlighted how recovery is not just about overcoming challenges—it’s about building new pathways, talents, and opportunities. Events like this are vital because they provide sober, family-friendly spaces where community members can connect and celebrate accomplishments without the presence of alcohol or other substances. Research shows that promoting sober events helps reduce stigma, strengthens recovery support networks, and gives individuals in recovery an opportunity to share their gifts with others. After all, recovery is not just about what people leave behind—it’s about what they create moving forward. This year’s event also featured a fundraiser for the upcoming Kalkaska High School/Middle School Talent Show on Friday, November 14, where guests enjoyed hotdogs, chips, and beverages for a donation, with all proceeds supporting the youth showcase. Just as individuals in recovery find confidence and healing through expression, youth in the community are encouraged to build self-confidence and resilience by sharing their own talents. As the Coalition looks ahead, planning is already underway for next year’s event on Saturday, September 19, 2026—so mark your calendars and stay tuned for more details. As the Live Well Kalkaska Coalition Coordinator say’s when speaking to the community and promoting the event “Not Every Event Needs a Beer Tent”.
