Summer Day Camp Combines Fun with Education

Alcona Prevention staff have been busy this summer participating in Alcona Schools’ middle school and elementary summer day camps. The program, supported by a Michigan Department of Education grant, was developed by the community group Inspiration Alcona and is hosted by Alcona Schools.

This free program is designed to provide students with positive experiences alongside school staff while helping to reduce summer learning loss. The camps feature hands-on educational activities, recreational opportunities, and field trips that keep students engaged and learning throughout the summer months.

One recent highlight was a trip to the Roscommon Zoo, where students enjoyed feeding and petting animals while learning about a variety of larger species. The experience provided a fun and educational opportunity for students to connect with nature and explore the animal world firsthand.

Programs like these help strengthen relationships, support academic success, and create meaningful experiences that keep youth engaged, connected, and thriving during the summer.
