570 Pounds Collected: A Successful Drug Take Back in Northeast Michigan

At the end of April 2026, communities across the country participated in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, and here in Northeast Michigan, it was a great success. For the second year in a row, Up North Prevention partnered with the Alpena Senior Citizens Center and the Alpena County Sheriff’s Department to make a meaningful impact.

Using a mobile unit, the team traveled to eight local law enforcement agencies over two days, making it convenient for residents to safely dispose of unwanted, unused, or expired medications. Thanks to this collaborative effort, an impressive 570 pounds of medication were collected and turned over to the DEA for safe disposal.

Up North Prevention is proud to continue offering this important service and looks forward to building on this success next year to help keep our communities safe, healthy, and informed.
